SONG OF THE WEEK: 8-27-2023

SONG:  "Here's To The Life"

ARTIST:  MxPx

ALBUM:  "Left Coast Live"

YEAR:  2017

PLACE OF ORIGIN:  Bremerton, Washington

YEARS ACTIVE:  1992 - present

WHAT I THINK THE SONG IS ABOUT:

"Here's To The Life" appears to be about making sure to make some time and space for yourself. It's not that the vocalist wants to get away from his current life, he just needs time for himself, probably to recharge the batteries and what not. With so many responsibilities in life, work, relationships, etc, it's important that you step back and take stock or just take a while to clear your own head to feel rejuvenated in your life. I chose the live version of "Here's To The Life" for my song of the week. If you want to check out the original studio recording of the song, it's on the 2007 MxPx album "Secret Weapon".

MY THOUGHTS ON MXPX:

MxPx, originally called Magnified Plaid, formed as a band back in 1992, hailing from Bremerton, Washington. These guys were just 15 years old when they formed the band. Originally, the band had ties to Christian punk, hence the major reason they signed with Christian punk label, Tooth & Nail. They would move away from the Christian punk label years later as their religious beliefs would change later on in life. The band dropped their debut album in 1994, called "Pokinatcha". They followed that up with "Teenage Politics" in 1995. It was their 1996 release, "Life In General", that really started generating buzz for MxPx, thanks in part to songs like "Chick Magnet", "Middlename" and "Doing Time". MxPx would be signed to major label A&M Records after the success of "Life In General". In 1998, the band showed a more mature sound without losing their pop punk and melodic sense when they dropped "Slowly Going The Way Of The Buffalo". This album would go on to be certified gold. 2000's "The Ever Passing Moment" included one of MxPx's most popular songs, "Responsibility". 2003's "Before Everything & After" ended their contract with A&M. It was also the band's highest charting album, peaking at #51 on the Billboard 200. 2005 saw the band drop "Panic" which featured the single "Heard That Sound" and in 2007, the band released "Secret Weapon". The title track is a sick song! From 2010 to the present day, the studio album releases became a little more sporadic. The band dropped "Plans Within Plans" in 2012 and "MxPx" in 2018, but they did fill out the years with a covers album, a few live albums and a few acoustic albums as well. There was a time during the 2010's where guitarist Tom Wisniewski and drummer Yuri Ruley stopped being touring members of the band for a few years which prompted singer/bassist Mike Herrera to form a punk/country band called Tumbledown and tour with other members but MxPx seems like they are right back on the front burner for all the guys in the band right now. The band dropped a brand new album this week called "Find A Way Home". Me and MxPx go back a long way! They were one of the first punk bands that I fell in love with and in my mind, were always underrated when it came to pop punk/skate punk bands. I mean, they had success for sure, but I always thought they were very much on par with Green Day who really shot to superstardom. I think Green Day is a little bit better than MxPx, but not by much. MxPx are always great to see live. So much energy! I loved MxPx's early albums but when I heard "Slowly Going The Way Of The Buffalo", I was super excited to see where this band was going. As I said earlier, they still had those killer melodies and pop punk stylings, but it seemed like a more mature sound which they continued throughout the years right up to the current day. I'm stoked that their new album just came out and I can't wait till they come around to Boston!

ALBUM:  "Ten Years And Running"

YEAR:  2002

YEARS ACTIVE:  1992 - present

WHAT I THINK THE SONG IS ABOUT:

"My Mistake" appears to be a song about dealing with the negative consequences of your bad decisions. It seems the vocalist just didn't make the right choices not only for himself, but also for his relationships. Gotta live with your mistakes, just make sure to learn from them.

SONG OF THE WEEK: 8-13-2023

SONG:  "I Am A Legend/I Am A Robot"

ARTIST:  Sink Alaska

ALBUM:  "Battle Lines From Better Times" EP

YEAR:  2016

PLACE OF ORIGIN:  Glasgow, United Kingdom

YEARS ACTIVE:  2013 - ????

WHAT I THINK THE SONG IS ABOUT:

"I Am A Legend/I Am A Robot" appears to be a song about acknowledging your mortality. As we get older, the realization of not being around forever becomes ever clearer.

SINK ALASKA DISCOGRAPHY (Full length albums only):

No full length releases.

Sink Alaska has released 3 EP's as of 2023.

MY THOUGHTS ON SINK ALASKA:

Sink Alaska is a United Kingdom band that formed around 2013. The band formed out of the ashes of two bands, The Day I Snapped and Beauty School Dropout. Early on, the band inked a deal with Make-That-A-Take Records. In 2013, the band released their debut EP titled "Sink Alaska". In 2014, they dropped another EP called "The Path Of Least Resistance" and most recently, yet another EP was released in 2016, "Battle Lines From Better Times". Sink Alaska has a melodic punk, skate punk vibe. You could tell they were influenced by the 90's skate punk scene. These guys have never released a full length studio album and really haven't been heard from since 2017/2018. In 2018, they updated their cover photo on their Facebook page and that was really the last news about the band. Seeing that that was 5 years ago, it may be safe to say that they have broken up but I don't know for sure. I'm positive I found out about these guys through dyingscene.com. They seemed to have some potential but there's not a whole lot of material out there from them.

SONG OF THE WEEK: 8-6-2023

SONG:  "For Goodness Sake"

ARTIST:  Chuck Ragan

ALBUM:  "Live At Skaters Palace"

YEAR:  2014

PLACE OF ORIGIN:  Gainesville, Florida

YEARS ACTIVE:  1993 - present

WHAT I THINK THE SONG IS ABOUT:

"For Goodness Sake" appears to be about slowing down to appreciate life, your surroundings and the one's you love. It seems like everything is moving so fast that it's hard to stop and cherish the simple things in life and the things that are most important. It's important to be grounded and it's important to maintain your core beliefs. I chose the live version of "For Goodness Sake" from the 2014 album "Live At Skaters Palace". You can check out the original studio version of the track on Chuck Ragan's 2009 album "Gold Country".

MY THOUGHTS ON CHUCK RAGAN:

Chuck Ragan, the pride of Gainesville, Florida, got his start in the music scene back in 1993. Of course, he is most known for being in the influential punk outfit Hot Water Music. With Hot Water Music, Ragan and the boys have released 9 studio albums, 4 compilations, a few live albums and a slew of splits and EP's. In 2005, Ragan stepped away from Hot Water Music and the remaining three members went on to form the short lived The Draft. Ragan really wanted to focus on a solo, acoustic project at that time. He released his debut solo album in 2007, called "Feast Or Famine". Shortly after that release, he dropped "Los Feliz" in the same year. In 2008, he released an album with folk artist Austin Lucas called "Bristle Ridge". It was around this time that Ragan had a vision of a folk/Americana type tour called "The Revival Tour". It would feature many punk rock singers from major groups performing stripped down sets and also had most of the artists jamming together throughout the show. The tours were pretty consistent from 2008 till 2012 and they featured Ragan, Laura Jane Grace (Against Me!), Dave Hause (The Loved Ones), Tim Barry (Avail), Brian Fallon (The Gaslight Anthem) and Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio) to name a few. In 2009, Ragan released "Gold Country". 2011 saw him drop "Covering Ground" which features a duet with Brian Fallon of The Gaslight Anthem on the song "Meet You In The Middle", which is a fantastic song! 2014 saw Ragan complete his fifth studio album for punk label SideOneDummy Records when he released "Till Midnight". This was his first solo album to feature a full band, which he named The Camaraderie. Ragan's most recent release was 2016's "The Flame In The Flood" which is actually the soundtrack for a video game. Though Chuck Ragan left Hot Water Music in 2005, he quickly reunited with them in 2007 and to this day they still are releasing new music and touring. I would say that Chuck Ragan was one of the first punk rock singers to start playing solo acoustic shows. It kinda has been a revolution of sorts. Tim Barry (Avail) has embarked on a long solo career. Dave Hause (The Loved Ones) has pretty much been focusing all his time on his solo stuff. You also had Tony Sly (No Use For A Name) and Joey Cape (Lagwagon) coming out with solo records. Mike Ness (Social Distortion), Russ Rankin (Good Riddance), Jim Lindberg (Pennywise), Greg Graffin (Bad Religion), Vinnie Caruana (The Movielife) and Kevin Seconds (7 Seconds) have also all come out with solo material and have done acoustic tours. I'm not sure if Ragan was the first to do it, but he's definitely a pioneer of it. His stuff with Hot Water Music is awesome and they are an extremely influential band but his solo stuff really shines a light on how f'n good he is as a songwriter and singer. I was really blown away by his talents. I love whatever he does. I get excited when new Hot Water comes out and I get equally excited when he puts out new solo material. I know Brian Fallon is from Jersey, but Chuck Ragan might be punk rock's Bruce Springsteen!
